Former American labor union leader and attorney that served as President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations from September 16, 2009 until his death. He also served as the president of the Trade Union Advisory Committee.
After receiving his doctorate degree from the Villanova University School of Law in 1974, he began working in labor as a staff attorney with the United Mine Workers of America until 1979.
On February 4, 2018, he made history becoming the first recipient ever to receive the World Peace Prize for Labor Leadership.
