The 37th President of the United States who became the first US president to resign from office, relinquishing the position in the aftermath of the 1974 Watergate Scandal.
He gained national recognition after the House Un-American Activities Committee, of which he was a member, successfully proved that Alger Hiss was a Communist spy.
His many accomplishments, especially in the area of foreign policy, included bringing an end to the Vietnam War, improving relations with the Soviet Union, and becoming the first president to visit the People’s Republic of China. He posthumously gained the appreciation of progressives for his many liberal domestic policies.

Just under ten months later, on April 18, 1994, Nixon had a cerebrovascular accident at his home in Park Ridge, New Jersey, and was taken to New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center. After an initial favorable prognosis, Nixon slipped into a deep coma and died four days later at the age of 81.
