British Labour politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dulwich and West Norwood from 1992 to 2015. During her time in government she launched an overhaul of the National Lottery and was in charge of London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics.

She worked as a psychiatric social worker before making the move into electoral politics in the early 1970s.

In 2015 she was nominated for life peerage and eventually rose to the rank of Baroness.
