Cartoonist from the U.K. best known as the artist behind the famous “Andy Capp” comic strip which began in 1957. A bronze statue was erected in his honor at his hometown of Hartlepool in 2007.

He served as a member of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in the British Army.

He won the Best British Cartoon Strip award five consecutive years from 1961-1965.

He married Jean Marie Glynn Barry but died less than a year later.

He was played by actor Tom Courtenay in the “Andy Capp” musical in 1982.
