Dancer and character actor who earned a 1948 Tony Award for his performance in Angel in the Wing. He also appeared in the Broadway productions of Ballyhoo of 1932 and Red Hot and Blue.

Early in his career, he created a vaudeville act with his future wife, Grace Barrett.

He regularly appeared as handyman Emmett Clark on The Andy Griffith Show.
