Ethiopian prime minister from 1995 until 2012 and head of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, the ruling political coalition. He served as chairman of the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)beginning in 1989 and also led the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front when it was founded in 1991.
He completed eight years of schooling in just five years. He joined the TPLF in 1975 after he left college. He was president of the transitional government of Ethiopia after the Ethiopian Civil War concluded in 1991.
He adopted the name Meles in honor of a person executed by Mengistu’s government.
