Biography - A Short Wiki

Director of the film adaptation of the James Joyce novel Ulysses. It was thought impossible to adapt because of its stream-of-consciousness style and the lack of almost any kind of a narrative.

He filmed the 1948 ode to California bodybuilding culture Muscle Beach and the 1959 avant-garde Los Angeles-centered documentary The Savage Eye.

His adaptation of Ulysses stayed true to the expletive-laden book. When the British Board of Censors requested he remove the offending language, he obliged with a white screen and a high-pitched sound.

He was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, one of six children of a Polish immigrant.

He and John Cassavetes were considered to be part of the American New Wave of filmmakers.
