A Twentieth-century American poet and author, he was also the founder of The Jargon Society, a prominent publishing house. His poetry collections include Jubilant Thicket and An Ear in Bartram’s Tree.

He studied at Princeton University but dropped out to attend art classes at North Carolina’s Black Mountain College.

He was a graphic artist and photographer as well as a poet and publisher.

He was the life partner of Thomas Meyer.

His publishing house, The Jargon Society, turned down the opportunity to publish Beat poet Allen Ginsberg’s famous work, Howl.
