The Democratic Party Mayor of Boise, Idaho from 1929-1933, he later served his state as a United States Senator. In the years following the Great Depression, he was responsible for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s recovery efforts.

After graduating from Louisiana Tech University (then called the Louisiana Industrial Institute) in his home state, he earned a law degree from the University of Chicago.

During his time in the United States Senate, he served on the Nye Committee, a group organized to investigate America’s financial involvement in World War I.

His marriage to Pauline Ruth Horn produced two children: George and Ross Pope.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Pope as head of the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1939; Pope held the position until 1951.
