World War I-era poet and artist best known for Poems from the Trenches. Many of his war poems, including “Dead Man’s Dump” and “Break of Day in the Trenches,” were written during his time as a soldier.

He suffered from chronic bronchitis and moved to South Africa to try to cure his condition.

He was killed in combat in France during World War I.

He was the son of Latvian-Jewish parents and grew up in London’s East End.

His self-portrait can be found in the British National Portrait Gallery, which also houses a painting of author Charlotte Bronte and her literary sisters Anne and Emily.
