Impressionist artist who designed U.S. Navy camouflage gear during World War I and World War II.

His early artwork was included in prestigious competitions sponsored by the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design.

He received silver and bronze medals for his paintings and prints at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

He was born in Vinton, Iowa, to a lawyer father and a missionary mother.

He was not the only artist to explore the use of camouflage; Abbott Thayer also tackled the challenge of camouflage, approaching the issue from a naturalist’s perspective.
