Remembered for his role as Virgil Edwards on the 1960s situation comedy McHale’s Navy, he also appeared in two popular Three Stooges films: The Three Stooges in Orbit and Snow White and the Three Stooges.

Before beginning his screen acting career, he served in the United States Navy and went on to become a bodybuilder and New York theater actor. His early television credits include small roles in episodes of The Twilight Zone and Sea Hunt.
