Modernist architect known for designing tower blocks or residential high-rises. He constructed the British Communist Party headquarters and the Daily Worker newspaper offices following World War II.

His interest in architecture was sparked by reading “Das englische Haus” by Hermann Muthesius. He studied architecture in Paris after relocating there in 1921 following the implosion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

He rose to prominence in the years after World War II when London, where millions of houses were destroyed, looked to his high-rises to solve the housing shortage.

His family ran a successful forestry and sawmill business. He married Ursula Blackwell early in the 1930s, the heiress of the Crosse & Blackwell fortune.

His name was used by Ian Fleming for the classic and infamous James Bond villain.
