Mainstay of Hollywood films and Broadway plays who played a juror in Twelve Angry Men. His other films include King of the Turf, Fury, and The Steel Jungle.
After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he joined the Greenwich Village theatre group, where Eugene O’Neill was putting on his first works.
His leading roles in numerous Broadway productions led him to sign a contract with RKO Pictures. He has appeared in nearly 60 films.
He had two sons with harpist Marietta Bitter, who he was married to from 1926 until her death in 1979.
He starred opposite Spencer Tracy in the 1935 film, The Fury. This was one of the many times he shared the screen with Hollywood’s biggest stars.
