English composer known for his film scores of movies and shows from the 1960s through the 1990s. Popular movies include Hamlet in 1969, Children of Rage in 1975, and Stevie in 1978. He also composed music for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and its sequels which ran from 1984 to 1994.

He was educated at Radley College and later at Cambridge University, where he received his doctorate in 1966. He was the assistant director for the assistant conductor of Bill Russo’s London Jazz Orchestra. In 1964, he became the music director of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of Marat/Sade.

In 1982, he won the BAFTA original music award for his scores on Smiley’s People, The Woman in White and I Remember Nelson.
