American poet, author, and attorney who is best remembered for his 1953 work Making a Poem. His other publications include All and Sundry: An Oblique Autobiography and Bullet-Hunting.
Early in his career, he worked as a reporter for The New York Evening Post. He published his debut poetry collection, Behind Dark Spaces, in 1930.
He wrote the libretto for a comic opera while he was a student at Columbia University.
He lived to be one hundred years old.
His degree in copyright law allowed him to advise author Sinclair Lewis on legal affairs.
