She began her literary career as a Hollywood screenwriter. Her film credits include The Prisoner of Zenda (1922) and Framed (1927).

Her popular novels include Thunderhead (1943) and Green Grass of Wyoming (1946).

She was born in New Jersey to a minister father. She married her third cousin, Kent Parrot, in 1905.
