He went to Duke University where he led a band called Les Brown and His Blue Devils, which later became the Band of Renown.

His band appeared in The Nutty Professor, starring Jerry Lee Lewis .

He was married to Gladys Knight from 1995 until 1997. He has a total of 10 children.
