He began working with Benny Carter’s orchestra around 1943.
He collaborated with Warne Marshon the album The Right Combination from 1957.
He was married many times during the 1950s and 1960s, but none of them were successful. His daughter Amy Jo wrote a memoir of her childhood with him.
He performed bebop with Charlie Parker, becoming one of the only white pianists to do so.
