American cartoonist who created the Torchy Brown comic and the Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger panel. She was a freelance writer before she started drawing cartoons.  

She began her career by writing for the Pittsburgh Courier while she was still in high school. 

Her character Patty Jo was turned into a doll in 1947. It was one of the first African American dolls and is considered a rare collector item. 

Her father died when she was just six years old, leading her and her sister to live with her aunt and uncle for a while. When her mother remarried she relocated the family to Monongahela, Pennsylvania. 

She and Lincoln Peirce both illustrated comic strips.
