Democratic politician, United States Senator (from 1969 to 1975), and Governor of Iowa (from 1963 to 1969). A recovered alcoholic, he established an Iowa alcohol treatment program during his tenure as governor and also supported liquor control legislation.

After attending the University of Iowa, he fought in the United States Army’s World War II-era North African Campaign.

Before beginning his political career, he worked in an administrative capacity for a trucking company and went on to establish the Iowa Better Trucking Bureau.
