From 1930 until 1939, this Democratic Party politician represented the state of Kansas in the United States Senate. He went on to serve on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s United States Tariff Commission.

After studying law at Kansas’ Central Normal College, he began working for the Wichita county attorney’s office.

In the early 21st Century, McGill remained one of just three Kansas Democratic Party politicians to have ever been elected to the United States Senate.

He spent the first five years of his life in Russell, Iowa, and the remainder of his childhood in Great Bend, Kansas.

He and one-time Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole were both United States Senators from Kansas.
