A Nineteenth-Century Irish author and poet, she is best remembered for her 1856 children’s story collection, Granny’s Wonderful Chair. Her other works include My Share of the World (a novel) and Pictures and Songs of Home (a poetry collection).

She had a bout with smallpox as a baby that left her blind for the rest of her life.

She lived in Edinburgh and London during her adult life.

She was one of twelve children. She died at the age of sixty-three, having never married.

She was a literary contemporary of British novelist Anthony Trollope.
