She began studying at the Boston Cooking School when she was thirty years old.

She established her own cooking school, Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery, in 1902.

She was born in Boston to a highly educated family and was expected to attend college. She suffered a stroke during her teenage years, however, and had to discontinue her education.
