He began wrestling as Dennis Smith in 1984 and changed his ring name to Chris Champion after joining Florida Championship Wrestling in 1986.

He has won tag team titles in promotions like Championship Wrestling Association, Florida Championship Wrestling and Southern Wrestling Federation.

He was born Christopher Ashford-Smith. His brother is fellow professional wrestler Mark Starr.
