Early Hollywood star who appeared in nearly two hundred silent films over the course of his two-decade career. He had leading roles in such movies as The Restless Sex, The Boomerang, and The Spitfire.

He began his career by appearing in director J. Stuart Blackton’s 1910 silent movie version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

The shift from silent to “talkie” films ended his cinematic career; from 1930 on, he worked as a stage actor.

With his first wife Ruth Hartman, he had two children. He later married South African diamond trade heiress Leah Barnato and, after divorcing her, one-time Ziegfeld Follies performer Avonne Taylor.

He and Adolphe Menjou both had prominent acting careers during the silent film era.
