A Croatian chemist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on polymethylenes. After his laboratory successfully synthesized sex hormones it became the world center of organic chemistry.

He worked as Hermann Staudinger’s assistant in Zurich.

Vladimir Prelog, who won the 1975 Nobel Prize for chemistry, worked under him during World War II.

He married his first wife Anna Hausmann in 1912.

Fellow Nobel laureate Fritz Haber was one of his professors at the High Technical School in Germany.
