A turn-of-the-century British literary critic and poet, he is best known for The Coming of Love, Christmas at the Mermaid, and Aylwin. His later works include Old Familiar Faces and Studies of Shakespeare.

He practiced law in London for many years and also worked for two decades as the poetry critic for the Athenaeum.

He has been credited with saving the life and literary career of alcoholic poet Algernon Charles Swinburne.

He was married to Clara Reich. He was buried in the West Norwood Cemetery in London.

He was a literary contemporary and friend of Alfred Lord Tennyson.
