Most recognized for co-writing the screenplay for the Ron Howard film Apollo 13 and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. He also directed and produced the award-winning documentary For All Mankind.

He got his start in the industry after studying geology at Texas A&M University. He’d submit spec scripts to different studios.

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium in 1996 for Apollo 13.

He was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and later resided in Houston, Texas. He died of lung cancer.

He co-wrote Apollo 13, which starred Bill Paxton.
